Our Vision for Writing at Eaves

At Eaves, we want every child to become a confident, creative and independent writer who knows that their words matter. Through our commitment to Excellence in Everything, we nurture children’s ability to express ideas, share their imagination and communicate effectively for different purposes and audiences.

Our Approach: Ready Steady Write

We use Ready Steady Write by Literacy Counts, placing high-quality, language-rich books at the heart of our writing curriculum. Through a progressive sequence of Immerse, Analyse, Plan and Write, children explore inspiring texts, develop vocabulary and learn how authors craft their writing. Teacher modelling, shared writing and independent practice help children build confidence in composition, grammar and sentence construction.

From early mark-making and first sentences to carefully crafted pieces in Year 6, our ambition is for children to develop secure foundations in spelling, handwriting and punctuation alongside creativity. We encourage them to reflect on their work, make thoughtful improvements and take pride in their achievements.

Oracy in Writing Sessions

Talking helps children become writers. Discussion, storytelling, role-play and oral rehearsal give children opportunities to explore ideas, practise vocabulary and shape sentences before writing. Through partner talk and collaborative discussion, children learn to listen carefully, explain their choices and build on others’ contributions.

We value every child’s voice. Providing time and support to rehearse ideas aloud helps children participate confidently and gives them a stronger starting point for writing.

Enrichment and Wider Writing

We aim to give children something meaningful to write about. Inspiring books, practical experiences, visits and visitors help spark curiosity, broaden vocabulary and bring writing to life.

Writing also reaches beyond English lessons. Across the curriculum, children apply their skills to explain discoveries, record learning, express opinions and communicate with an audience. Whether creating a story, describing a scientific investigation or writing a persuasive leadership application, they learn that writing has a purpose and can make a difference.

Our vision is for every Eaves child to leave primary school with the skills, confidence and enthusiasm to write successfully—and a voice they feel proud to share.
