The Role of the Governing Body
What our Governors do
The Governing Body plays a strategic and supportive role within the school. Governors work closely with the Headteacher, who has responsibility for the day-to-day leadership, organisation, and management of the school and its staff.
The Governing Body’s core responsibilities include:
Providing strategic leadership by:
Working in partnership with the Headteacher to set the overall direction of the school
Establishing the school’s vision, values, and aims
Agreeing priorities and targets through the school improvement strategy
Ensuring that all statutory responsibilities are met
Holding the school to account by:
Appointing the Headteacher
Monitoring progress and outcomes against agreed targets
Managing the performance of the Headteacher
Engaging with parents, pupils, and the wider community
Contributing to the school’s self-evaluation processes
Overseeing financial management by:
Approving and setting the school budget
Monitoring expenditure to ensure effective use of resources
Ensuring value for money
Identifying and managing risks to the organisation
The Governing Body meets as a full board each half term and does not operate sub-committees. Some governors also take on specific link roles related to particular subjects or areas of school life. In these roles, governors meet with staff during the year to discuss developments and report back to the full Governing Body.
Governors are responsible for the recruitment and appointment of the Headteacher and may also be involved in staff recruitment. In addition, governors support the school in a less formal capacity by maintaining a visible presence and attending school events throughout the year.
All governors are expected to act professionally and to uphold confidentiality at all times. To support this, the Governing Body has adopted a Code of Conduct and works within agreed Standing Orders.
