Maple Class- Year 5

Welcome to Year 5. Thank you for taking time to visit our class page. I hope you find all of the information below useful.

There is so much to look forward to this year: an exciting curriculum, being stretched and challenged, and of course, amazing experiences!

What will my child be learning about this half term?

In English this half term, our writing will focus on the novel 'The Hound of the Baskervilles' by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. We will also look at this story told as a graphic novel! Our first piece of writing will be a non-fiction formal report describing one of the mysterious events from the story!

Our class novel (a book we read for pleasure) is Wonder, by RJ Palacio.

In maths, the children will be learning to compare areas and perimeters of rectangles and rectilinear shapes, and using measures and comparison to understand scaling.

In Science, our topic is 'Properties and changes of materials'. Children will learn to compare and group materials based on their properties, understand how some materials can change state or dissolve, and explain which changes are reversible or irreversible, including changes caused by heating, cooling, mixing and burning.

In History, our topic is 'Ancient Civilisations'. The children will learn about Ancient Sumer, the Indus Valley and the Shag Dynasty. They will evaluate and critique a range of sources to reach a judgment about which ancient civilisation had the greatest achievement.

Here are our final topics for this half term:

  • RE: Hinduism

  • Art: Drawing and printing

  • Computing: App design

  • Spanish: At the market

When will my child have PE?

On Mondays and Wednesdays, your child should come to school dressed in their PE kit and trainers. Please see the uniform page on our website(https://www.eaves.st-helens.sch.uk/page/school-uniform/161792)

What homework will my child get?

Daily reading for at least 10 minutes and diary signed by an adult – minimum 4 times a week.
10 spellings to be learned and practised on EdShed – minimum 3 times per week.
One piece of written homework (alternating between maths and English) brought home in homework books on Fridays. Homework is due back in class on Wednesdays.

Why is reading so important?

The importance of reading for children cannot be underestimated. Reading for pleasure can benefit a child’s education, social and cognitive development, their wellbeing, and their mental health. Reading is the bedrock of all learning.

Children in Year 5 are expected to read a minimum of 4 timers per week. Children complete a quiz on their book in school when they have read it. Children change their books regularly and independently.
