There is so much to look forward to this year: an exciting curriculum, being stretched and challenged, and of course, amazing experiences!
What will my child be learning about this half term?
In English this half term, our writing will focus on the novel 'The Lost Book of Adventure' by Teddy Keen. Our first piece of writing will be a survival narrative based the story.
Our class novel (a book we read for pleasure) is 'There's a Boy in the Girls' Bathroom by Louis Sachar.
In maths, the children will be learning to:
Convert between units of measure, including using common decimals and fractions.
Find non-unit fractions of quantities.
Recall decimal fraction equivalents for 1/2, 1/4, 1/5 and 1/10, and for multiples of these proper fractions.
Multiplying whole numbers and fractions
Finding equivalent fractions and simplifying fractions

In Science, our topic is 'Living things and their habitats'. The children will learn about how living things are classified and grouped based on their characteristics. They will also study a variety of habitats and learn how animals and plants are adapted to survive in these environments. The children will develop an understanding of life cycles, reproduction in some plants and animals, and the important role that environmental changes can have on living things.
In History, our topic is 'What was life like in Baghdad compared to life in London in 900AD?'. In this topic, children will learn about the city of Baghdad around AD 900, including where it is located, how it was designed, and why it became a powerful centre for trade, learning, and innovation during the Golden Age of Islam.
Here are our final topics for this half term:
RE: Christianity - Church
Art: Wire sculpture
Computing: Data handling
Spanish: Out of this world

10 spellings to be learned and practised on EdShed – minimum 3 times per week.
One piece of written homework (alternating between maths and English) brought home in homework books on Fridays. Homework is due back in class on Wednesdays.
Why is reading so important?
The importance of reading for children cannot be underestimated. Reading for pleasure can benefit a child’s education, social and cognitive development, their wellbeing, and their mental health. Reading is the bedrock of all learning.
Children in Year 5 are expected to read a minimum of 4 timers per week. Children complete a quiz on their book in school when they have read it. Children change their books regularly and independently.
