Homework
Building Independence, Celebrating Effort and Striving for Excellence
At Eaves Primary School, we believe that learning doesn't stop at the classroom door! Homework provides a valuable opportunity for children to revisit and consolidate their learning, develop independence and take pride in their achievements.
Through The Eaves Way – Excellence in Everything, we encourage all children to approach their homework with the same positive attitude, effort and high standards that we expect throughout the school day.
Why Do We Set Homework?
Homework plays an important role in supporting children's learning and personal development. It provides opportunities to:
Consolidate Learning – Practise and strengthen the knowledge and skills taught in school.
Develop Independence – Encourage children to take responsibility for completing tasks and managing their time.
Build Confidence – Give children opportunities to apply their learning independently and celebrate their progress.
Encourage Positive Learning Habits – Develop organisation, resilience, perseverance and a sense of responsibility.
Strengthen Home–School Partnerships – Provide families with an insight into their child's learning and opportunities to support their development.
Homework Expectations – Years 1 to 6
Children in Years 1 to 6 receive homework each week, carefully selected to support and reinforce their classroom learning. Homework will alternate between English and Mathematics, ensuring children have regular opportunities to practise key skills across both subjects. Occasionally, children may also receive topic-based homework linked to their wider curriculum learning, encouraging creativity, curiosity and opportunities to explore their interests.
Our Weekly Homework Routine
Friday – Homework is set: Children receive their homework for the week.
Wednesday – Homework deadline: Completed homework must be returned to school no later than Wednesday.
We encourage families to establish a regular homework routine that works for them, allowing children sufficient time to complete their tasks thoughtfully and without unnecessary pressure.
Pride, Presentation and Excellence in Everything
At Eaves, we have high expectations for the quality and presentation of children's work, whether it is completed in the classroom or at home. The same standards of care, effort and excellence that we expect in school should be reflected in every piece of homework.
We encourage all children to:
Take pride in the presentation and quality of their work.
Write neatly and carefully, following the handwriting expectations taught in school.
Present their work clearly, showing care with spelling, punctuation and mathematical recording where appropriate.
Read and follow instructions carefully, ensuring tasks are completed to the best of their ability.
Demonstrate independence, resilience and perseverance, even when learning feels challenging.
Complete homework thoughtfully rather than rushing simply to finish.
Return completed homework on time.
We recognise that children develop at different rates and that the quality of work will naturally reflect their age, stage and individual needs. Above all, we value genuine effort, personal pride and a commitment to doing their very best.
How Can Families Help?
We greatly value the encouragement and support families provide with homework. Parents and carers can help by providing a quiet space, establishing a positive routine, discussing tasks and encouraging children to check their work before handing it in.
While adult guidance is welcomed, we encourage children to complete as much of their homework independently as possible. This helps teachers understand what children can confidently do and where additional support may be needed.
If your child finds a task particularly challenging, please encourage them to try their best and let their class teacher know so that appropriate support can be provided.
Working Together to Achieve Excellence
Homework is not simply about completing a task. It is about developing the confidence, independence, responsibility and positive learning habits that will support children throughout their education and beyond.
By working together, we can help every child develop pride in their learning, celebrate their achievements and recognise the satisfaction that comes from giving something their very best effort. At Eaves, excellence is not about being perfect – it is about taking pride, showing determination and always striving to be the best we can be.
