Maths at Eaves

Maths Coordinator: Miss Archer

“We will always have STEM with us. Some things will drop out of the public eye and go away, but there will always be science, engineering, and technology. And there will always, always be mathematics.” - Katherine Johnson

The Strands of the Maths National Curriculum

  • Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.

  • Reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language

  • Can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and nonroutine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.

Our Vision for Mathematics at Eaves

At Eaves, we want every child to see themselves as a mathematician: confident, curious and willing to persevere. We develop fluency, reasoning and problem-solving so children can make connections, explain their ideas and use mathematics in everyday life. Our commitment to Excellence in Everything means ambitious learning for all, with support and challenge that help every child succeed.

Our Mathematics Curriculum

We use the NCETM curriculum to structure learning in carefully sequenced steps, building on what children already know. Our lesson sequence moves from revisiting previous learning through exploration, independent practice, and reasoning and problem-solving. Practical resources and different representations help children understand mathematical ideas deeply.

Through our Maths Hub partnership, we strengthen teaching for mastery through professional development and collaboration.

Mastering Number complements our wider curriculum across EYFS, KS1 and KS2. In Reception and KS1, children develop secure number sense, understanding how numbers are composed and connected. In Years 4 and 5, the programme strengthens multiplication and division fluency and understanding of multiplicative relationships. These foundations help children calculate flexibly and approach new learning confidently.

Oracy in Mathematics

Talk is central to learning mathematics at Eaves, particularly during the exploration stage of our lessons. Children work together to investigate concepts, notice patterns and discuss possible approaches. Mathematical vocabulary and stem sentences help them organise their thinking, explain what they notice and justify their reasoning.

By listening, questioning and building on one another’s ideas, pupils deepen understanding and gain confidence in expressing mathematical thinking. Rehearsing ideas aloud also prepares them for independent work.

Enrichment and Wider Mathematics

We help children recognise mathematics beyond the classroom through meaningful links with science, computing, design and technology, and everyday experiences.

During Future Me Careers Week, our Money Matters workshops develop financial awareness and help children explore how mathematics supports choices about money. Careers experiences show pupils how mathematical skills are used in different jobs, giving purpose to learning and widening aspirations.

We want children to leave Eaves with secure knowledge, confidence in their abilities and a positive attitude towards mathematics that lasts throughout life.

Confident mathematicians. Curious thinkers. Resilient problem-solvers. Mathematics the Eaves Way.

What is Maths Mastery?

NCETM define this as; “Mastering maths means pupils acquiring a deep, long-term, secure and adaptable understanding of the subject. The phrase ‘teaching for mastery’ describes the elements of classroom practice and school organisation that combine to give pupils the best chances of mastering maths. Achieving mastery means acquiring a solid enough understanding of the maths that’s been taught to enable pupils to move on to more advanced material.”

NCETM Mastering Number Programme

At Eaves, we are proud to take part in the NCETM Mastering Number Programme, supporting children in Reception, Key Stage 1 and Years 4 and 5 to develop strong number sense, mathematical fluency and confidence.

In Reception and KS1, Mastering Number helps children build secure foundations by developing a deep understanding of how numbers are composed, how they relate to one another and how this knowledge can be used flexibly when calculating. Short, focused sessions use carefully chosen representations, including rekenreks, alongside precise mathematical language to help children see, understand and talk about number rather than simply memorising facts.

This strong foundation is developed further through Mastering Number at KS2, where the focus moves towards securing fluency and automaticity in multiplication and division facts and developing a deeper understanding of multiplicative relationships. This helps children approach increasingly complex mathematics with greater confidence and efficiency.

The programme complements our wider Teaching for Mastery approach at Eaves. Children are encouraged to notice patterns, make connections, use mathematical vocabulary, explain their thinking and reason about the relationships they see. This also links closely with our commitment to oracy, as children learn to articulate mathematical ideas clearly and justify their reasoning. NCETM reports that participating schools have seen improvements in pupils' confidence, fluency and ability to talk about mathematical relationships.

Ultimately, Mastering Number helps us ensure that children develop secure, connected and flexible mathematical knowledge, giving them strong foundations on which future mathematical learning can be built.
