Calm, Predictable & Supportive Classrooms
Creating Environments Where Every Child Feels Safe, Settled and Ready to Learn
At Eaves Primary School, we believe that every child deserves to learn in an environment where they feel safe, secure, valued and ready to succeed.
We recognise that the physical, social and emotional environment of a classroom can have a significant impact on children's learning, wellbeing, confidence and participation.
Through calm and purposeful learning environments, consistent routines, positive relationships and thoughtful adaptations, we aim to create classrooms where every child can access our ambitious curriculum and experience success.
Our approach is underpinned by the Eaves Way, our school values and our GROWTH Framework, ensuring that high expectations are balanced with understanding, encouragement and appropriate support.
Why Are Calm and Predictable Classrooms Important?
Children learn best when they understand what is expected, feel emotionally secure and can focus their attention on learning.
Predictable routines, clear expectations and well-organised classrooms help reduce uncertainty, support independence and create a positive learning atmosphere.
For some children, including pupils with SEND, difficulties with sensory processing, communication, attention, anxiety or emotional regulation can make aspects of the school environment more challenging.
By recognising and responding to these needs, we can reduce unnecessary barriers and ensure that children feel supported and included.
A calm classroom is not simply a quiet classroom. It is a purposeful, welcoming environment where children feel comfortable, confident and ready to participate.
Calm Classrooms and the Eaves Way
Our four shared expectations provide a consistent foundation for positive learning environments throughout school.
Ready
We help children feel prepared for learning through clear routines, organised resources and supportive transitions.
Responsible
We encourage children to take responsibility for their belongings, learning environment, choices and actions, with appropriate guidance and support.
Resilient
We help children develop strategies to manage challenges, regulate their emotions and persevere when learning feels difficult.
Respectful
We promote kindness, consideration, positive communication and respect for the needs of others.
We recognise that some children may require additional modelling, visual reminders, individual adjustments or personalised support to understand and meet these expectations.
Our approach maintains high expectations while recognising that children may need different levels of support to achieve them.
Supportive Classrooms Through Our GROWTH Framework
Our GROWTH Framework provides a consistent structure for teaching and learning, helping children understand the learning process and develop confidence through familiar approaches.
G – Gather Prior Knowledge
Familiar routines and retrieval activities help children settle into learning, recall previous knowledge and prepare for new concepts.
Teachers use clear prompts, visual resources and structured activities to support participation.
R – Receive New Learning
Teachers provide clear explanations, modelling and carefully organised learning materials.
Thoughtful seating, reduced distractions and accessible resources help children focus and engage with new learning.
O – Over to the Class
Children participate in guided practice, discussion and shared learning within a supportive classroom environment.
Clear expectations for communication, turn-taking and collaboration help pupils feel confident to contribute.
W – We Can Do This
Children apply their learning with increasing independence, using appropriate resources, scaffolds and support.
Predictable routines and organised learning spaces help pupils develop confidence and take responsibility for their learning.
T – Tell Me How It Went
Children are encouraged to reflect on their learning, communicate how they feel and identify what has helped them succeed.
Teachers use feedback and pupil voice to understand whether classroom approaches and adaptations are effective.
H – How Do We Connect Our Learning?
Children revisit and apply knowledge in different contexts, supported by familiar routines, resources and learning strategies.
This helps pupils make connections and develop confidence when approaching new experiences.
Through our GROWTH Framework, we aim to create predictable and supportive learning experiences that encourage participation, confidence and independence.
What Do Calm and Supportive Classrooms Look Like at Eaves?
1. Consistent Routines and Expectations
Clear routines help children understand what happens throughout the school day and what is expected of them.
We use consistent approaches to classroom organisation, movement, transitions and learning activities, helping children develop independence and confidence.
2. Visual Supports and Predictability
Visual timetables, now-and-next prompts, classroom reminders and clear instructions can help children understand routines and prepare for changes.
Where appropriate, additional preparation is provided for unfamiliar activities, visitors, timetable changes or transitions.
3. Thoughtful Classroom Organisation
Our classrooms are organised to support learning, accessibility and independence.
Teachers consider seating arrangements, access to resources, classroom displays, movement around the room and potential distractions.
We aim to create welcoming and purposeful spaces that support concentration without unnecessarily restricting children's opportunities to explore and interact.
4. Sensory Awareness and Adaptations
We recognise that children may respond differently to noise, lighting, movement, touch and other sensory experiences.
Where appropriate, staff consider adaptations such as:
Seating away from particular distractions.
Reducing unnecessary noise or visual clutter.
Providing access to suitable sensory resources.
Offering movement or regulation breaks.
Preparing children for potentially overwhelming activities.
Using alternative spaces or approaches when required.
Sensory adaptations are considered in response to individual needs rather than assuming that one approach will suit every child.
5. Positive and Supportive Communication
Adults use clear, respectful and encouraging language to help children understand expectations and feel supported.
Instructions are adapted where needed, with opportunities for repetition, additional processing time, visual reinforcement and checking understanding.
6. Supporting Emotional Regulation
We recognise that children sometimes need additional support to understand and manage their emotions.
Staff aim to respond calmly and consistently, helping children develop strategies to recognise feelings, communicate needs and return to learning when ready.
This may include trusted adult support, emotional check-ins, visual resources, regulation strategies and access to an appropriate quiet or safe space.
7. Supportive Transitions
Transitions between activities, classrooms, playtimes and different stages of school can be challenging for some children.
We support children through clear communication, consistent routines, advance preparation and individual transition arrangements where necessary.
Understanding and Supporting Emotional Regulation
Emotional regulation is the ability to recognise, understand and manage emotional responses.
We recognise that these skills develop over time and that some children require additional support to regulate their emotions, particularly when they are overwhelmed, anxious, frustrated or experiencing sensory difficulties.
At Eaves, we aim to support children through:
Positive relationships with trusted adults.
Calm, consistent and respectful communication.
Helping children recognise and name their emotions.
Modelling appropriate regulation strategies.
Providing reassurance and opportunities to seek help.
Recognising early signs of distress.
Offering appropriate regulation breaks or supportive spaces.
Working with families to understand individual needs.
We recognise that children may need adult support to regulate before they are able to reflect on their behaviour or re-engage with learning.
Our approach combines clear expectations with empathy, consistency and an understanding of individual needs.
How Do Supportive Classrooms Promote Inclusion?
Calm, predictable and supportive environments help remove barriers to learning by:
Reducing uncertainty and unnecessary distractions.
Supporting children who experience sensory or communication difficulties.
Helping pupils understand routines and expectations.
Developing emotional security and confidence.
Encouraging independence and responsibility.
Supporting attention, concentration and engagement.
Creating opportunities for positive relationships.
Enabling children to participate more fully in classroom learning.
For children with SEND, thoughtful classroom adaptations and predictable routines can make a significant difference to their wellbeing, confidence and access to education.
We recognise that inclusion does not mean every child receiving exactly the same provision. It means understanding individual needs and making appropriate adjustments so that all children have meaningful opportunities to succeed.
Our aim is to create environments that adapt to children's needs, rather than expecting every child to adapt to the same environment.
Supportive Environments Across Our School
Early Years
Our Early Years environments provide opportunities for exploration, play, communication and independence.
Familiar routines, visual supports, carefully organised provision and responsive adult interactions help children feel secure and confident as they develop.
Key Stage 1
Clear classroom routines, visual prompts, structured transitions and accessible resources support children as they develop independence and adapt to increasingly formal learning.
Key Stage 2
Consistent expectations, organised learning environments and opportunities for increasing responsibility help older pupils develop independence, resilience and confidence.
Appropriate adaptations continue to be provided according to individual needs.
Beyond the Classroom
Our commitment to calm and supportive environments extends to playtimes, lunchtimes, assemblies, educational visits, clubs and wider school experiences.
We recognise that children may require additional preparation, adjustments or support to participate successfully in different environments.
Our Commitment to Inclusive Environments
At Eaves Primary School, we believe that every child deserves an environment where they feel safe, understood, respected and able to thrive.
Through consistent routines, positive relationships, our Eaves Way expectations and thoughtful adaptations, we aim to ensure that all children can participate fully in school life.
We recognise that creating an inclusive environment is an ongoing process of listening, reflecting and responding to children's needs.
