Positive Relationships & Belonging
Every Child Known. Every Child Valued. Every Child Included.
At Eaves Primary School, we believe that positive relationships and a strong sense of belonging are the foundations of a happy, inclusive and successful school community.
Every child deserves to feel safe, respected, understood and valued. We recognise that children learn best when they feel emotionally secure, have trusting relationships with adults and peers, and know that they are an important part of our school family.
Our approach to inclusion goes beyond academic learning. We are committed to creating a nurturing and supportive environment where differences are celebrated, individual needs are understood and every child is encouraged to participate, contribute and thrive.
Through our school values, the Eaves Way and our whole-school approach to teaching and learning, we aim to ensure that every child experiences a genuine sense of belonging.
Why Are Positive Relationships Important?
Positive relationships help children develop confidence, emotional security, resilience and a positive attitude towards learning.
When children feel known and understood, they are more likely to engage in learning, seek support when they need it, develop friendships and approach new challenges with confidence.
At Eaves, we recognise that relationships are especially important for children who may experience additional barriers to learning, communication, social interaction or emotional regulation.
Our staff take time to understand children's individual strengths, interests, experiences and needs so that support can be thoughtful, consistent and responsive.
We believe that every child should have someone who knows them, listens to them and helps them succeed.
Our Eaves Values – Building a Culture of Belonging
Our five school values underpin the relationships, interactions and experiences that shape everyday life at Eaves.
Exploration
We encourage curiosity, confidence and a willingness to try new things. Children are supported to explore their interests, ask questions and discover their strengths in an environment where everyone feels included.
Authenticity
We celebrate individuality and encourage children to be themselves. We recognise that everyone has different strengths, experiences and needs, and that these differences enrich our school community.
Vision
We maintain ambitious expectations for every child, encouraging pupils to believe in themselves, recognise their potential and look positively towards their future.
Encouragement
We build confidence through kindness, positive reinforcement, recognition and support. We celebrate effort, improvement, resilience and achievements in all their forms.
Synergy
We recognise the importance of working together. Through collaboration, friendship, teamwork and mutual respect, we help children develop a strong sense of community and belonging.
The Eaves Way – Our Four Rs
Our shared expectations help create a positive, respectful and inclusive school environment.
Ready
We help children feel prepared, supported and confident to participate in learning.
Responsible
We encourage children to make positive choices, develop independence and understand how their actions affect others.
Resilient
We support children to manage challenges, learn from mistakes and develop confidence when things feel difficult.
Respectful
We teach children to value differences, listen to others, show kindness and treat everyone with dignity.
We recognise that some children may need additional teaching, modelling, reminders or personalised support to understand and meet these expectations.
Our approach combines high expectations with understanding, consistency and appropriate adjustments.
Positive Relationships Through Our GROWTH Framework
Our GROWTH Framework supports positive relationships by creating opportunities for children to participate, communicate, collaborate and reflect throughout the learning process.
G – Gather Prior Knowledge
Teachers value what children already know, recognise their experiences and encourage them to contribute to learning.
R – Receive New Learning
Teachers create supportive learning environments where children feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes and developing
understanding.
O – Over to the Class
Children are encouraged to participate, share ideas, listen to others and develop confidence through guided discussion and collaborative learning.
W – We Can Do This
Children develop confidence and independence, knowing that encouragement, guidance and appropriate support are available when needed.
T – Tell Me How It Went
Children are encouraged to reflect on their learning, share their experiences and recognise their achievements.
Teachers listen carefully to pupil feedback and use this to strengthen understanding and relationships.
H – How Do We Connect Our Learning?
Children make connections between their learning, personal experiences and the wider world, developing understanding, empathy and respect for others.
Through our GROWTH Framework, we aim to create classrooms where every child feels confident to contribute, take part and succeed.

Inclusion in School Life
We strive to ensure that every child can participate in learning, enrichment, clubs, educational visits and wider school opportunities, with appropriate adaptations and support where needed.
Working in Partnership with Families
We recognise that positive relationships with parents and carers are essential. We work together to understand children's needs, celebrate their successes and provide consistent support.
Supporting Emotional Wellbeing and Regulation
We understand that children's emotional wellbeing can affect their ability to learn, communicate and build relationships.
At Eaves, we aim to respond to children's needs with patience, understanding and consistency.
Our approach may include:
Building trusted relationships with familiar adults.
Providing clear routines and predictable expectations.
Recognising early signs of distress or dysregulation.
Supporting children to recognise and communicate their feelings.
Providing opportunities for reassurance, reflection and emotional regulation.
Using individual strategies, social stories or visual supports where appropriate.
Supporting children to repair relationships and develop positive social skills.
Working with families and specialist professionals when additional support is required.
We recognise that behaviour can communicate an unmet need, difficulty or emotion. Our staff seek to understand the reasons behind behaviour while maintaining clear expectations and supporting children to make positive choices.
How Do Positive Relationships Support Inclusion?
Positive relationships help remove barriers to participation and learning by:
Developing children's confidence and emotional security.
Creating a sense of safety and belonging.
Encouraging communication and help-seeking.
Supporting positive behaviour and emotional regulation.
Promoting friendship, empathy and mutual respect.
Reducing feelings of isolation or exclusion.
Helping children feel comfortable participating in learning.
Strengthening partnerships between school and home.
For children with SEND, trusted relationships and consistent approaches can be particularly important in supporting communication, confidence, wellbeing and successful participation in school life.
We believe that inclusion begins with belonging.
