Birch Class- Year 2

Welcome to Year 2! Year 2 is an exciting year filled with opportunities to grow, discover and work together.

Thank you for taking the time to visit our class page. I hope you find the information below useful.

Our Learning Journey in Spring 1

Spring Term in Year 2 is filled with opportunities to question, explore and develop independence. From exploring our local history to creating individual collages, Spring Term in Y2 is an exciting time!

Our English learning will take us to Bluebell Wood hunting for a 'Bog Baby'. What other creatures will we find in our own 'Finding Narrative'?

In Mathematics, we will start to build our knowledge and understanding of multiplication and division.

In Science, we will explore through a variety of investigations and enquiry types. We will classify if objects are alive, dead or never lived and seek patterns of the living things in our local habitats.

Taking inspiration from collage artists such as Oliver Jeffers and Eric Carle, we will create a unique collage of a minibeast. Computing creates strong links with mathematics this half-term through data handling including tally charts and pictograms. History takes us back to the 1800s with our learning about the Rainhill Steam Train Trials. Finally, RE revisits and builds on our Y1 learning focusing on Hindu Dharma.

PE Days

On Wednesdays and Thursdays, your child should come to school dressed in their PE kit and trainers. Please see the uniform page on our website(https://www.eaves.st-helens.sch.uk/page/school-uniform/161792)

Homework

Homework will be sent home every Friday and expected to be returned by the following Wednesday.

Homework will relate to our current learning in Year 2 including reading comprehensions, maths worksheets, research tasks, etc.

Please ensure that all homework is completed in a handwriting pencil.

Reading

The importance of reading for children cannot be underestimated. Reading for pleasure can benefit a child’s education, social and cognitive development, their wellbeing, and their mental health. Reading is the bedrock of all learning.

At Eaves, we expect our children to read four times a week at home. This should be recorded in their reading diaries. Children are welcome to read any book including their school book or a book from home.

In Y2, children begin to use Accelerated Reader. This software ensures all children are reading at the correct level whilst promoting choice and enjoyment of reading. Each week, children will complete a 'book quiz' to assess what they have understood about their book.

Birch Class Timetable

Above is a typical weekly timetable for our Year 2 class; however, please note that lesson times and activities may vary from week to week to respond to curriculum needs and enrichment opportunities.
