Our Learning Journey

Life in Year 2
Life in Year 2 is a crucial step in the journey of independent learning. Children are each given a role to play to ensure the day to day running of school life runs smoothly through classroom jobs. This independence is also translated into the children’s approach to their learning. Over the course of the year, their resilience, risk taking ability and resourcefulness flourishes, and children begin to take ownership of their own learning which is wonderful to see!

Mornings begin with daily Phonics/ Comprehension, Handwriting, English and Maths followed by a range of Foundation Subjects in the afternoon.  

Children also have daily Mastering Number Sessions which are helping them make links in their basic maths skills (plus they love it when they get to use the Rekenreks!)

In Year 2, children are introduced to Accelerated Reading where they can access books from the School Library and do quizzes on them when they have read them… they love this part!

Over the course of the year, there will be opportunities to enhance the children’s knowledge and enrichment through visitors and trips.

 

Our Class Text for this half term

PE Days

Homework

Homework this half term will focus on practical, hands-on activities that support and reinforce learning in the classroom. Children will be encouraged to complete a range of engaging tasks at home, and these can be recorded in their homework books through writing, drawings, photographs, labels, or simple explanations. Homework can be completed in pencil, and we look forward to seeing the different ways children choose to share their learning. Homework will be sent home every Friday and expected to be returned by the following Wednesday.

Children also have access to TT Rockstars to practice their multiplication and division facts. Log- ins can be found in your child's reading diary.

Reading

The importance of reading for children cannot be underestimated. Reading for pleasure can benefit a child’s education, social and cognitive development, their wellbeing, and their mental health. Reading is the bedrock of all learning.

At Eaves, we expect our children to read four times a week at home. This should be recorded in their reading diaries. Children are welcome to read any book including their school book or a book from home.

Throughout Year 2, children will begin to access Accelerated Reader as and when they are ready. This programme helps to ensure that children are reading books at an appropriate level while also encouraging choice and a love of reading. Once children are using Accelerated Reader, they will complete short book quizzes to demonstrate their understanding of the texts they have read and to support their progress as readers.
