Birch Class- Year 2
Welcome to Year 2! Year 2 is an exciting year filled with opportunities to grow, discover and work together.
Thank you for taking the time to visit our class page. I hope you find the information below useful.
Our Learning Journey in Summer 2
Summer 2 in Year 2 is filled with opportunities to question, explore, develop independence and prepare for our transition into Key Stage Two. From exploring Antarctica in Geography to designing and creating our own moving toy in DT, Summer Term in Y2 is a wonderful time.
Our text in English will be 'Rosie Revere Engineer'. Inspired by this excellent story, the children will create their own inventions and character to star in their narratives.
In Mathematics, we will continue to explore Money before moving onto Shape, Time and Measure.
In Science, we will explore the term 'offspring' including whether animals are born or hatched and how some offspring can look different to their parents. Excitingly, Year 2 have some little friends joining their classroom this half-term as they will observe real life caterpillars transform into beautiful butterflies.
In Computing, we will begin to learn how to program ready for KS2! Geography will take us all the way to Antarctica to explore why polar bears do not live there. Finally, in RE we will discover the importance of the Ten Commandments in Judaism.

PE Days
On Wednesdays and Thursdays, your child should come to school dressed in their PE kit and trainers. Please see the uniform page on our website (https://www.eaves.st-helens.sch.uk/page/school-uniform/161792)
Homework
Homework will be sent home every Friday and expected to be returned by the following Wednesday.
Homework will relate to our current learning in Year 2 including reading comprehensions, maths worksheets, research tasks, etc.
Please ensure that all homework is completed in a handwriting pencil.
Children also have access to TT Rockstars to practice their multiplication and division facts. Log- ins can be found in your child's reading diary.
Reading
The importance of reading for children cannot be underestimated. Reading for pleasure can benefit a child’s education, social and cognitive development, their wellbeing, and their mental health. Reading is the bedrock of all learning.
At Eaves, we expect our children to read four times a week at home. This should be recorded in their reading diaries. Children are welcome to read any book including their school book or a book from home.
In Y2, children begin to use Accelerated Reader. This software ensures all children are reading at the correct level whilst promoting choice and enjoyment of reading. Each week, children will complete a 'book quiz' to assess what they have understood about their book.
Birch Class Timetable
Above is a typical weekly timetable for our Year 2 class; however, please note that lesson times and activities may vary from week to week to respond to curriculum needs and enrichment opportunities.
