Cultural Capital

Cultural capital at Eaves

“Cultural knowledge that serves as currency, helping us to navigate society and shape the opportunities available to us.”
Pierre Bourdieu

At Eaves Primary School, we recognise that every child arrives with their own unique experiences, knowledge and perspectives shaped by their family, community and wider culture. These experiences may include languages spoken, beliefs, traditions, heritage, interests and life experiences.

We value what children already bring with them and carefully build upon this to broaden their understanding of the world around them.

What is Cultural Capital?

Cultural capital refers to the knowledge, skills, experiences and behaviours that children accumulate over time. It enables them to understand the world, communicate effectively, make informed choices and participate fully in society.

Developing cultural capital supports children to:

  • Build confidence and aspiration

  • Develop a strong sense of identity and belonging

  • Achieve success at school and beyond

  • Access opportunities regardless of their starting point

By providing rich and varied experiences, we help children develop the cultural awareness and understanding they need for future learning, employment and life in modern Britain.

Our Curriculum and Cultural Capital

At Eaves Primary School, our curriculum is designed to ensure children gain the essential knowledge and experiences needed to become educated, responsible and active members of society. We introduce children to a wide range of ideas, cultures, creativity and achievements, helping them to appreciate diversity and develop respect for others.

Cultural capital is built gradually through carefully planned learning opportunities, enrichment experiences and meaningful interactions, both inside and outside the classroom.

The Eaves Way

We recognise that cultural capital is developed cumulatively and that several areas of development work together to support children’s growth.

At Eaves Primary School, we focus on the following six interrelated areas:

  • Personal Development – building confidence, independence and self-belief

  • Social Development – forming positive relationships and understanding the wider world

  • Physical Development – promoting health, well-being and an active lifestyle

  • Spiritual Development – encouraging reflection, curiosity and respect for beliefs and values

  • Moral Development – understanding right and wrong and taking responsibility for actions

  • Cultural Development – celebrating diversity, heritage, creativity and the arts

Through our curriculum, school ethos and enrichment opportunities, we ensure that every child at Eaves Primary School develops the knowledge, experiences and confidence they need to succeed in school and beyond.
