Oak Class- Year 6
Welcome to our Year 6 Page!
This is your go-to space for important updates and key information to support your child through their final year at Eaves Primary School.
We are excited to work with your child and look forward to working closely with you to make Year 6 a positive, successful, and memorable year for every child.
What will my child be learning this half term?
During this Spring term in Year 6, we will be engaging in a rich and varied curriculum across all subjects.
In English, we will be developing our writing skills through explanation texts and discovery narratives inspired by Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of Species, focusing on clear structure, scientific language, factual evidence and engaging storytelling.
Our class read for this half term will be Holes by Louis Sachar.
In Maths, our learning will centre on ratio, proportion, scaling and algebra, alongside continued practice to strengthen arithmetic fluency.
Science lessons will explore animals including humans, with a particular focus on the circulatory system and its vital role in the body.
In History, we will be studying the ancient civilisation of the Egyptians, learning about their society, beliefs and achievements. We will study the evidence and reach a judgement as to what might have caused the death of Pharoah Tutankhamun.
Art lessons will be inspired by the work of Mike Barrett, with an emphasis on creativity and the use of digital media.
In Spanish, we will be expanding our vocabulary related to sports, building confidence in speaking and understanding. Religious Education will focus on Hinduism, allowing pupils to explore key beliefs, practices and values within the faith.
During Computing, we will be studying image and photo editing
When will my child have PE?
PE will be on Wednesday and Thursday. The children will come dressed in their PE kits and trainers. Please see the website for correct uniform (https://www.eaves.st-helens.sch.uk/page/school-uniform/161792)
What homework will my child get?
Homework will rotate weekly between an English and Maths task. Alongside this, there will also be set an Ed Shed Spelling assignment.
Homework will be given out on a Friday and will need to be returned by the following Wednesday.
Homework is set regularly to support and reinforce learning in class and to help the children develop independence and good study habits. Children are expected to complete them carefully and hand them in on time, ensuring all work is neatly presented in either pen or pencil, depending on the task.
Why is reading so important?
Reading is important in Year 6 as it underpins learning across the whole curriculum. The importance of reading for children cannot be underestimated. Regular reading develops vocabulary, comprehension and inference skills, which are essential for lifelong learning, communication and social skills, and independence. It also supports writing by exposing pupils to a wide range of language structures and ideas, while building concentration, confidence and a lifelong enjoyment of books.
Throughout the week, the children are expected to read at least 4 times and record this within their Reading Diaries. This will then be checked and signed off by an adult within Year 6.
