Skills for Life: Safe, Confident and Prepared

At Eaves Primary School, we believe that education extends far beyond the classroom. We are committed to ensuring that every child develops the knowledge, confidence and practical life skills needed to keep themselves and others safe, both in school and in the wider world.

Through our carefully planned curriculum, personal development opportunities and enriching experiences, we equip our children with essential skills that will support them throughout their lives. From learning about road and water safety to understanding first aid, CPR, online safety and how to respond in an emergency, we aim to empower our pupils to make informed decisions, recognise risks and act responsibly in a range of real-life situations.

Rooted in The Eaves Way and our school values, we encourage children to become confident, resilient and responsible individuals who understand the importance of looking after themselves and others. By providing meaningful, age-appropriate learning experiences and working alongside specialist organisations and members of our wider community, we help children develop the awareness and skills they need to navigate the world safely.

Our vision is simple: to ensure that every child leaves Eaves not only academically prepared for their next steps, but equipped with the essential life skills, confidence and compassion to thrive beyond our school gates.

Restart a Heart – Learning Lifesaving Skills

At Eaves, we believe in equipping our children with the knowledge, confidence and skills to make a positive difference in the world around them.

As part of our commitment to Personal Development and learning essential life skills, our Key Stage 2 children are taking part in Restart a Heart, a live online awareness session delivered in partnership with the North West Air Ambulance Charity.

During these sessions, children will learn how to recognise the signs of a cardiac arrest, understand when and how to call 999, and discover the importance of CPR and early intervention in saving lives. They will also gain a valuable insight into the incredible, lifesaving work carried out by the North West Air Ambulance Charity.

These experiences go beyond the classroom, helping our children develop confidence, compassion and a sense of responsibility towards others. Rooted in The Eaves Way, we want every child to recognise that even the smallest actions can make the biggest difference – and one day, their knowledge could help save a life!

Water Safety- Float to Live

We were delighted to welcome a representative from Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service to school to talk to our children about the importance of staying safe around water.

The children learned valuable water safety messages and discussed what they should do if they ever find themselves in difficulty in the water. The session helped to raise awareness of potential dangers and gave children practical strategies to keep themselves and others safe.

Key water safety advice included:

  • Stay calm and float if you unexpectedly fall into water.

  • Float like a starfish – spread your arms and legs out to help you stay afloat.

  • Keep your head tilted back and your ears in the water to help with floating.

  • Control your breathing and avoid panicking.

  • Shout for help if you are in trouble.

  • Do not swim to safety straight away – take time to regain control of your breathing first.

  • If you see someone else in difficulty, do not enter the water. Instead, call 999 and ask for the Fire and Rescue Service.

  • Look for something to throw to the person in trouble, such as a lifebuoy or rope, while keeping yourself safe.

We would like to thank Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service for taking the time to visit our school and share these important life-saving messages with our pupils.
