Ash Class- Year 1

Welcome to Ash Class!

Welcome to Ash Class. Thank you for taking the time to visit our class page. Year 1 is such a fantastic year, full of wonder, curiosity and joy! Throughout the year, children will be enthrawlled with learning, experiences and fun.

What will my child be learning about during Summer Term?

We have lots of new exciting topics to explore this half term!

In History, we will be learning about The Great Fire of London. We will be creating a time line to sequence all of the main events that lead up to the time of Great Fire in Pudding Lane.

In Art we will be learning all about the work of Georgia O’Keefe. We will study pieces of her art work and use her choice of colours, style and techniques to create our our artistic masterpieces.

In RE, we will be learning about Judaism. We will introduce the new vocabulary associated to the Jewish faith and will particularly study the Jewish tradition of Shabbat.

In Maths we will be looking at positional language, describing where objects are placed and finding out what happens when objects turn in different directions.

Our new English text:

We will be reading this new book and will use it to write our version of the story. We will be focusing on using various punctuation such as exclamation marks and questions marks. We will also try using suffixes such as ‘er’, ‘est’ and ‘ing’ to describe characters and settings from the book. As always, we will put out phonics skills to the test to segment new words to spell and will use as many common exception words accurately in our sentences too.

When will my child have PE?

PE Days are currently Tuesday and Wednesday.

Please ensure your child is wearing full PE kit on these days. See the uniform page on our website for more details.

What homework will my child get?

Homework is given weekly and will reflect learning children have done that week in class. All homework is given on a Friday in their homework book and should be returned to class by the following Wednesday.

The homework will feature instructions on how to complete and should be completed independently by the child where possible.

Why is reading so important?

Reading is an integral part of your child's learning. Each Friday your child will come home with a reading book reflective of their current phonological understanding. Please aim to read with your child a minimum of 4 times over the week, noting this in their reading diary. A short comment regarding progress, any tricky sounds/words or general feedback can be included to inform the class teacher.

Alongside this, your child will access the whole school library each week. They will choose a 'reading for pleasure' book to be brought home. This book is not for the child to read independently, but to be shared alongside a grown-up or sibling to reinforce a love for reading and immerse them into a variety of genres, settings and characters. There is no expectation to write a comment about this book in your child's diary.

Phonics

We will continue to work through our Phase 5 sounds and look at applying our new digraphs and trigraphs by blending them in our head to read new words. The Phonic Screen Check is coming up in the Summer Term so we will take time to prepare and practise our blending skills in both real words and alien words.
