“Sometimes the ideas just come to me. Other times I have to sweat and almost bleed to make ideas come. Writing is a mysterious process, but I hope I never find out exactly how it works. I like a mystery, as you may have noticed.”- J.K. Rowling

Early Reading
Our Vision for Phonics...
Our vision is to teach children to become fluent, confident readers by providing a systematic and engaging phonics program that builds a strong foundation for all future learning. Key components include a systematic approach to teaching letter-sound relationships, regular assessment to identify and support students, and providing a rich reading experience to foster a love of reading beyond phonics instruction.
Reading
Our Vision for Reading…
Reading at Eaves is at the heart of our curriculum and our aim is to create life-long responsible readers through creating a positive and active reading culture and climate throughout our school. Reading is a channel in which children are given the opportunity to make connections, expand knowledge, collect language (words and phrases) to live within and experience the beauty of the ever changing world around them.
Writing
Our Vision for Writing...
We have carefully selected high quality texts that give our children the inspiration and motivation to write for different purposes through a genre rich curriculum. Writing at Eaves is at the heart of our curriculum and our aim is to create life-long, responsible and skilled writers that are ready to tackle the written world. We aim is to ensure that when our children leave this primary phase they are fully equipped in their ability to write for many different purposes understanding the importance of their reader whether they are writing to entertain, inform or debate they will have the correct skill set to do so.
What Phonics looks like...
Daily phonics lessons for children in Reception, Year one and Year two follow the Little Wandle Scheme. In Reception, Year One and Year Two, children take home a reading book matched to their phonics phase. As children move through Year 2 and into Year 3, their phonics knowledge becomes more fluent and automatic, and they take home a reading book to practise both the decoding and comprehension techniques they are being taught. In years 3-6, all children take home a book matched to their age.
Children may also need additional support through our Rapid Catch up and our Daily Keep Up provision.
What Reading looks like...
At Eaves we aim to inspire all children to become responsible, well-read fluent readers. It is through our rigorous reading curriculum that is established in our early years setting and continues to bubble and build every year stretching beyond their primary phase.
Phonic strategies are introduced in our nursery setting when the children are ready to build on their oral story telling and rhyme. When ready they are introduced to the sounds that create written words. This is developed throughout school as children are grouped according to their phonic ability. Books that they take home also mirror their phonic development in addition to pleasure reads (real books) to share as a family. Daily reading for children off the Little Wandle programme is an opportunity to explore high quality texts , developing stamina, fluency and their knowledge of vocabulary . It is through these sessions that children will really develop their knowledge and confidence of the different aspects of the reading domain. Home readers are closely matched to their reading ability. Thus creating confident, responsible life long readers.
What Writing looks like...
Our writing curriculum is designed to provide a broad and balanced education that meets the needs of all children. We follow the award-winning Ready Steady Write from Literacy Counts to develop confident, independent and successful writers with high aspirations. Our writing curriculum is research-informed and impact-proven, carefully designed to support all children to master the foundational skills and write for a clear audience and purpose. Through the use of high-quality, vocabulary-rich texts, we provide exciting and meaningful reasons to write. Children are immersed in literature and taught to craft their writing with precision, using a range of pedagogical approaches, including sentence accuracy, modelled writing and shared writing, as well as regular opportunities for editing.
We value spoken language as a foundation for writing. Through structured talk, drama and vocabulary exploration, children learn how to organise and express their ideas clearly before writing them down. Our aim is for every child – regardless of need – to write fluently and take pride in their work. We want our pupils to leave primary school as enthusiastic writers, ready for the next stage of their education.
